Welcome to
First 5 Santa Barbara County

All children deserve the best start in life. In the first 5 years of a child's life, critical connections are made in the brain that impact lifelong learning. How we nurture and support our children today will impact their success in school and in life.

First 5 Santa Barbara County Children and Families Commission works in partnership with individuals and organizations throughout the county, to support the health, early learning and well-being of children pre-natal through age 5 and their families.

Help us to make Santa Barbara County the best place for young children to grow and learn!

September is Nutrition Awarness Month

The Brain-Boosting Power of Healthy Eating

It’s the beginning of a new school year and as young children head to preschool and kindergarten, parents can help their kids shine in the classroom by preparing healthy meals for breakfast – and for the lunchbox. Proper nutrition plays a key role in a child’s ability to learn and do well in school. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, kids who eat a balanced diet and start the day with a nutritious breakfast have more energy and concentrate better in class.

Parents, caregivers and early learning educators play a valuable role in providing healthy food choices to children at an early age. To help kids develop lifelong healthy eating habits, First 5 Santa Barbara County offers some helpful tips. Please visit the parent page for more information.
