The First 5 Santa Barbara County Advisory Board provides advice to the commission on issues related to supporting the well-being of young children and their families. They advise the commission on determining community needs, increasing community participation and awareness, and are actively involved in ongoing strategic planning and evaluation.
The Advisory Board is made up of no more than 25 members who represent the rich diversity of interests, geographical regions, economic backgrounds and cultural and ethnic heritage of our county’s residents. The Board includes:
- At least one member of a tobacco cessation organization
- Representatives from our main geographical communities
- Individuals with expertise in areas such as child care, child and maternal health, family support, special needs and alcohol and drugs
- At least two members who are expectant parents or parents of children ages birth through age 5.

The Advisory Board meets at least 4 times per year. Meetings are located in Solvang, with the Board determining the best times and locations that will promote maximum participation. Translation, transportation and accessibility for those with special needs are available as needed.
