About Us

Who We Are

First 5 Santa Barbara County is a unique public organization, created by California voters in 1998, to invest tobacco tax revenues in programs that improve the lives of children from prenatal through age 5. Our focus is on making sure that all children are born healthy and raised in nurturing homes and communities where they can grow up healthy, eager to learn and reach their full potential.

We invest in health, education and family support services throughout Santa Barbara County and provide leadership in the community to increase support for our youngest children.

How We Work

First 5 Santa Barbara County is led by a Commission appointed by the County Board of Supervisors. We have offices in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara with staff that oversee grants and partner in community efforts. Through our Early Care and Education Division we provide direct services to the community focused on increasing the amount of high quality child care and preschool. An Advisory Board, with representation from across the county, is actively involved in First 5 programs and projects.

Our approach is to invest in communities and partnerships, because we believe that we can have a better chance of success if we work together. We invite you to learn more about First 5 and to partner with us to help young children.
